Recent Project – Photographer’s Blog

Peggy Kroeger is a great writer.  Let’s just start with that.  I don’t read blogs, any blogs, but I read hers.  She is possibly an even better photographer than she is a writer, if that’s possible.  OK – Gushy, but true.  Needless to say, I had a blast being part of her sharing life’s stories and photos with her friends and followers. In it’s most basic form, this site is “just” a personal blog.  However, the font, flipped paper widgets, and grey on grey colors really make the...

Recent Project – Author’s Book Website

This is the second website we have created for Joshua Brooks, a fantastic author and speaker located in the Pacific Northwest.  His website was built on the powerful Dynamix Theme template built by Andy at NorthVantage.  The fun part is that you can’t tell it’s the same theme.  We did this to have the power (huge) of Dynamix with the simply layout we wanted.  In short, there was a lot of customization.  Below is the demo site for DynamiX (left) and a page from Josh’s site (right).         GOALS...

Step 7 – Launching Your WordPress Website

STEP #7 -  LAUNCHING YOUR WORDPRESS WEBSITE In our last step we are going to finalize your WordPress set up by (A) entering database information and (B) entering website information.  Once this is done you will be able to take the first steps into your new home on the Web.  Let’s get going. A1.  In FileZilla, or your FTP client, go to your domain (www.example.com) and open the “Content” folder. A2.  Secondly, open the “Web” folder.  Inside this folder you will find “index.html”.  You need...

Step 5 – Adding WordPress to Rackspace Hosting

Step 5 – Adding WordPress to Rackspace Hosting

STEP #5 – ADDING WORDPRESS TO YOUR RACKSPACE CLOUD HOSTING You have a domain name (example.com) that directs traffic to your hosting (home).  Your database is configured (something techy..) and you’re ready to “load” WordPress into you hosting (home).  Doing great. WordPress is a bunch of files in a bunch of folders.  These files all work together to create a “framework” for your website, something like blank, white walls in a new house.  When you install it, you can stay out of the cold, but it...

Step 4 – Setting Up Your Database Part I

STEP #4 – SETTING UP WORDPRESS DATABASE AT RACKSPACE.com Step #1 – You purchased your domain name at godaddy.com. Step#2 – You set your godaddy.com nameservers to point your domain to Rackspace.com, which will be the “home” for your website. Step #3 – We walked through where to purchase Rackspace Cloud Hosting and how to set up your domain there. Now we’re going to look at setting up a database at your Rackspace Hosting account.  This will be used so you can install the WordPress “frame...

Step 3 – Cloud Hosting at Rackspace

STEP #3 – CLOUD HOSTING AT RACKSPACE.com Every website needs a home, a place where it actually sits on someone’s computer.  “Hosting” is a home for your website.    Rackspace Cloud Hosting is like a medium size rambler with 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and a 10,000 car garage.  And all the cars are BMWs. If you would like to run a Rackspace.com Cloud Hosting account, they start at $149.00 a month and move up from there.  If you would like 206Web.com to provide our Rackspace hosting for you (same thing) we ask...

Step 2 – Setting Up Godaddy.com Nameservers

Step 2 – Setting Up Godaddy.com Nameservers

STEP #2 – SETTING UP GODADDY.COM NAMESERVERS Setting up nameservers allows your domain to be “directed” to a different location for hosting.  You need this if your hosting account is somewhere other than at godaddy.com.  I use RackSpace Cloud Hosting and love it.  We’ll get into that later.     To set up your nameservers you will need to do the following: 1.  Log in to your godaddy.com account. 2.  Click “My Account” in the topish navigation bar.  “My Account” is usually...

Step 1 – Acquiring a Domain Name

Step 1 – Acquiring a Domain Name

STEP #1 – HOW TO BUY A DOMAIN NAME 1.  Get a Registrar account – I use godaddy.com.  If you do not have a godaddy.com account, you may create one here.  At the top of the home page, click on the words “Create Account” and fill in the required information (about 2 pages).  By the end, you will need some form of payment information, either a bank account, CC, or paypal account. 2.  Search for a domain that you would like to use.  That’s a short sentence for what could be a very long process.  I’m...

WordPress Website Series – Introduction

INTRODUCTION – WORDPRESS WEBSITE SERIES The purpose of this series is to allow ANYONE to create their own website, from domain purchase to fully completed project.  Why would I give away these somewhat secret directions that hurt my business?  2 reasons: 1.  Empowering people is a great thing.  I don’t consider myself a “mentor”, but I hope some will use this to grow and share their gifts with others. 2.  This can be a lengthy and tedious process that takes hours even if you’ve done it 100 times. ...
